The Stones

Gathering no moss…

No Glastonbury would be complete without a visit to the stones. This picture is from 2000. Situated on the far side of  the valley they have become a place of rest and ritual.  I celebrated my birthday sitting on top of one once.  I lifted up my drink and shouted happy birthday to me!  In seconds there was an assembled choir accompanied by someone on a saxophone singing happy birthday.  Bliss. (Actually it wasn’t really my birthday, but that’s another story!)

The stones are not that ancient.  They were placed there in 1992 as a response to the increasingly tight security around Stonehenge.  Their tender age does not disqualify them from being ‘real’.  They act like any other stone circle.  They sit in a landscape and provide the focus for human activity and memory.  I wonder how many ashes are scattered there? How many lives have been conceived?
